Tips on Redesigning Her Bedroom

Back to School means it's the start of a new year and what better time to think about redecorating a kids room than now.  Starting out the school year with a fresh new take on décor, storage and organization can help set the pace for a productive school year.  So Sweet Girl Boutique has compiled some of our favorite ideas and tips to consider when redecorating a girl's bedroom.

Consider her personality and decorate for it.
Does she love color?  OR does she prefer a more neutral color palette?

Once you've determined her sense of style, start with the color palette.  According to an article in the September 2013 issue of House Beautiful, colors that paint companies are predicting will be big are bright and cheery.  Even neutrals have shifted from khaki to warm grays.   You can see the 11 colors they're predicting will be hot next online.  Don't be afraid of color.  When you paint a vivid color on walls and the room is empty it can be shocking but remember it will be balanced out with furnishings and décor.  If you just can't muster the courage to go whole hog with her favorite, paint an accent wall or add stripes.  With a little painter's tape and a ruler it's easy.  We're really excited about the possibilities for girl's bedrooms with Frog Tape's new Shape Tape.  It comes in three shapes - chevron, wave and scallop and we can think of endless opportunities for it!  Walls, ceilings, furniture, bulletin boards, wow - the possibilities are just endless and so easy to add that pop of pizzaz.

Take advantage of yard sale and hand-me-down furniture pieces.  We love this piece that was picked up at a yard sale.  It started out as a country oak finish but with a coat of black paint and some craft paint and paint pens, it's been transformed to be a wow piece that any girl would love.

They've accented above the dresser with a mirror found at a garage sale, painted it black and used a pink paint pen to add accents.  The twin acrylic lamps and black shades provide symmetry and balance the piece while providing lighting.

Lighting is important for any room but particularly a bedroom.  You need overhead lighting, task lighting and accent lighting.  Overhead lighting is a great place to add a little bling to a girl's bedroom.  We love adding beautiful chandeliers to girl's bedrooms to provide overhead lighting and a touch of drama like this striking silver chandelier.  It appears to be just dripping with jewels!

Think about organization, especially when thinking about back to school.  Be sure she has a place to do her homework and that the table or desk she uses offers a good source of lighting to work by.  When you make an area to do homework a fun place to be, it makes doing math problems a lot easier in our opinion.  Add some pizzaz with a brightly colored chair like this Avalon Chair in Ice Blue.

Most importantly, collaborate with your daughter.  Use this opportunity to teach her the basics of design and to allow her to make some choices.  You may want to give her a choice between two or three things that you approve of instead of allowing her free reign however.  You want to be sure you're as happy with the final product as she is.
